Five female Lancer athletes have worked their way to the top of the OCAA charts in their respective sports – 2 of which also sit in first place in the Canadian College Athletic Association (CCAA) stats.
Kierstyn Bennett’s tireless efforts on the field helped push her team to an inspiring bronze medal finish at this year’s OCAA Women’s Rugby 7s Championships on November 4th. A veteran athlete but first year Lancer, Bennett made an immediate impact on her team and in the league. At the end of the regular season, Bennett had the second highest point count out of 9 teams with 90 total points made up of 14 tries & 10 converts. Her talent & hard worked earned her the nod for League All Star and a Championships Tournament All Star.
Volleyball standout Sara Piana Yafu made a name for herself in her very first year at Loyalist & has been making people take notice ever since. Now in her third year, Piana Yafu leads the OCAA yet again in kills/set, total kills, hitting percentage, points/set and total points. The outside hitter’s explosive offensive abilities have helped her team to an undefeated 6-0 record so far in the season. With a season high 24 points in a single game, Piana Yafu continues to put up impressive numbers game after game & is currently ranked #1 in the CCAA in kills/set.
Piana Yafu isn’t the only women’s volleyball player making noise in the league. Teammate Christine Madogo is ranked #1 in the OCAA in blocks/set (1.24), total blocks (26) AND blocks/set in the CCAA. Madogo’s transition from first to second year is a testament to her hard work in the off season. Having recorded 30 blocks over the course of the entire 2016/17 season, Madogo is on track to demolish her own record in the first semester alone.
Also from the women’s volleyball team, first year setter Lorraine Spellman has worked her way to the top spot in the OCAA for assists/set (9.14) and third place in the National rankings. Spellman’s ability to run an an effective offense & control the court has been a huge asset to her team. With quick speed and a sharp mind, Spellman runs the team’s offense with control & decisiveness. The women’s volleyball team currently sits in the 3rd place in OCAA rankings and has cracked the top 15 in the CCAA National rankings.
Jenni Thompson is already the Lancers’ women’s basketball all time leading scorer, but if her performance so far in the 2017/18 season is any indication, she’s no where close to being done. In her 5th year of eligibility, Thompson has recorded 125 points and 44 rebounds in only 5 games, including a dominating 36 point & 19 rebound game against the Algonquin Thunder on November 22. Currently lead the OCAA in leading points/game (24.6), Thompson sits just shy of first place in the same statistic in the CCAA.
