The Loyalist Lancers women’s basketball team had a successful weekend in Barrie playing a Friday/Saturday double header against the Georgian Grizzlies. Even though some traffic issues delayed the start of the Friday game, it did not delay the team chemistry that has become a hallmark of the 2017/18 Lancers. Defense was the name of the game Friday as the Lancers held Georgian to only twenty points per half. The Lancers took the early lead and led Georgian sixteen to five after one. At the midway mark the Lancers had increased their lead to thirty-five to twenty. When the final buzzer sounded, the scoreboard read fifty-three to forty for Loyalist. Jenni Thompson played hard scoring twenty three points, grabbing ten rebounds and getting seven steals. Kurstyn Brant continued her tough play with seven points and three charges taken. Hailey VanRossum played solid defense and made some great decisions while attacking the basket.
If the Friday game was all about the defense then the Saturday game was all about offence. The Lady Lancers came out on fire in the second game and couldn’t miss in the first quarter. Building on the first quarter lead of twenty-eight to eight, the halftime score was forty-five to seventeen for Loyalist. The Lancers continued to attack the basket and finished the win with a commanding eighty-seven to fifty-three score. Jenni Thompson hit six threes while scoring twenty-three points. Brianna Arichara scored twenty one points and was nine for twelve from the free throw line. Brittany Mason added fifteen points while shooting forty-five percent from the field. Katie Wiggins continued her sharp shooting ways and racked up fourteen points.
The Lady Lancers look to build on this two game win streak when they visit George Brown next Saturday.
