Mustafa Alali Named Valedictorian for Health Sciences Convocation
Loyalist College cross country student-athlete Mustafa Alali took centre stage at Tuesday's convocation ceremonies, serving as the Valedictorian for the School of Health Sciences and marking a significant milestone in both his academic and personal journey.
A dedicated member of the Lancers cross country program for four years, Alali graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, successfully balancing the demands of varsity athletics, academic excellence, and leadership throughout his time at Loyalist.
Being selected as valedictorian was a moment Alali described as a true privilege, reflecting on the honour of representing his graduating class and speaking at such an important occasion.
Alali's path to the stage was defined by resilience and gratitude. Having come to Canada as a refugee from Lebanon, he spoke about the opportunities he has been given and the deep appreciation he holds for being able to pursue his education and athletic career at Loyalist. In his address, he paid tribute to Canada, as well as the many individuals who supported him along the way, including his family, classmates, faculty, and members of the Loyalist College community.
In addition to his academic and athletic accomplishments, Alali played a significant leadership role on campus, serving as a two-time Student Government President. His commitment to enhancing the student experience and advocating for his peers left a lasting impact across the college community.
Throughout his valedictory message, Alali emphasized the importance of connection, reminding graduates that while academic milestones are significant, it is the relationships formed along the way that leave the greatest impression. He reflected that while exams and coursework may fade from memory, the people and shared experiences will endure, stressing the importance of being there for one another.
He concluded his address with a powerful quote from Maya Angelou: "I've learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel."
Alali's message reinforced the importance of compassion and community—values that were evident throughout his time as both a Lancer student-athlete and campus leader.
As he crossed the stage, Alali left behind a legacy of perseverance, leadership, and empathy, proudly representing the Lancers and the Loyalist College community.
