The Loyalist Lancers women's rugby team kicked off their 2024 season with their first tournament under Head Coach Jo Anne Robinson. The team showed promise and resilience throughout the day, despite a challenging start.
In their opening match, the Lancers fell to the Algonquin Wolves 17-7. First year Lancer Grace Ricard (Belleville, ON) scored the lone try for Loyalist, with veteran Ryan Fitzgerald (Trenton, ON) converting. Although they were unable to secure the win, the Lancers showed grit and tenacity throughout the entire battle.
The team bounced back in the second match, defeating the Fleming Phoenix 28-5 in a commanding performance. Ricard got back on the board with another try along with fellow first year Lancers Holly McMaster (Belleville, ON) and Victoria Lumb (Wolfe Island, ON). Fitzgerald had a big game for the team, scoring a try of her own and converting three to help seal the victory.
In their final game of the day, the Lancers faced a tough St. Lawrence Surge team, who went undefeated in the tournament. Despite a hard-fought effort, the home team was unable to score, falling 17-0.
Fitzgerald led the team in scoring with a total of 13 points on the day followed by Ricard with 10.
Throughout the tournament, the Lancers showed steady improvement. The first year athletes displayed impressive speed and toughness, while veterans like Abby Reid and Sarah Fielding provided crucial leadership, physicality, and relentless effort.
"It was an exciting first tournament with so many positives from the entire team" says Coach Robinson. "The athletes played with heart and showed improvement each game. We have a solid foundation to build on and a lot of talent throughout the squad. We are already looking forward to next weekend!"
The Lancers will look to build on their strong showing in their next tournament on September 21-22 in Kingston, hosted by St. Lawrence.
