Lancers Continue to Build Despite Loss to the Wolves
The Loyalist Lancers women's soccer team battled hard on Wednesday, September 18, in a 4-0 loss to the Algonquin Wolves, but the scoreline didn't tell the full story. Despite the result, the Lancers showed impressive defensive resilience and flashes of promise throughout the game.
Led by a stellar showing from goalkeeper Jen Keller, who made numerous crucial saves, the Lancers challenged the Wolves for every ball and fought for position on the field. Keller's efforts kept the game competitive, while the backline stayed organized and focused, demonstrating the defensive improvements the team has been working on.
Kaylee Wyngaarden turned in a standout performance with controlled but aggressive play. The Lancers moved the ball well, utilizing the full width of the field and creating opportunities that tested the Wolves' defense. The team's tenacity in challenging the ball and their ability to spread the play was evident throughout the match.
Head Coach Derek Arsenault praised the team's progress, saying, "That game was another example of how we are putting together the things we've been working on. The score truly was not indicative of how we played. We are really stressing patience while defending as a team, as well as patience with the ball and simplicity in our play. There was a ton of that in the game on display."
Adding to the atmosphere, the Loyalist crowd was loud and supportive, with enthusiastic fans—and even some cute dogs—creating a fun and engaging environment for both teams.
Despite the loss, the Lancers will look to build on this performance as they continue to develop and grow as a unit. The team hits the road on Saturday to take on the Fleming Phoenix in Peterborough on Saturday, September 21st.
